Robert Watman

 

This is the last will and testament of me Robert Watman of Longnewton in the county of Cumberland Yeoman made by me in this 31st. day of May in the year of our Lord 1839 whilst I was of sound mind memory and understanding thanks be unto almighty God for the same. 

I give devise and bequeath all that freehold estate called Watch Hill situate at or near Longnewton in the parish of Holme Cultram in the said county of Cumberland unto my nephews Thomas Elliot George Elliot William Elliot James Elliot and my niece Ann the wife of John Reay to hold to them my said four nephews and niece equally amongst them as tenants in common and not as joint tenants and to their several and respective heirs forever. 

Also I give devise and bequeath unto my two nieces Isabella Fisher and Jane James all my freehold common land situate at Longlandshead in the said parish of Holme Cultram now in my own possession to hold to them the said Isabella Fisher and Jane James and their heirs forever as tenants in common and not as joint tenants in equal moieties. 

I give and bequeath unto my brother Pattinson the sum of one hundred pounds. 

To Jane Watman the widow of my late brother Thomas the sum of one hundred and fifty pounds. 

To my housekeeper Jane Bamber two hundred pounds, thirty pounds of which I order to be paid by my executrix immediately after my decease I also give and bequeath unto the said Jane Bamber one milch cow (called Mad Cow) my best clock chest of drawers and book case six chairs and one round table also my silver watch looking glass and tea tray also two feather beds bedsteads pillows bolsters and curtains blankets sheets and quilts as they will be found at the time of my decease for her own sole use and benefit. 

I also give and devise unto my said housekeeper the dwelling house now occupied by Robert James for and during the term of her natural life as also the garden and liberty of the yard also my china teapot cups and saucers all which bequests I intend shall not be liable to the debts control or engagements of the husband of the said Jane Bamber and to be paid and delivered unto her own hand notwithstanding her coverture her receipt alone to be a good and sufficient discharge to my executrix for the same. 

To my three nieces Mary Todd Sarah Hayton and Frances Roper I give and bequeath to each of them one hundred pounds.

To Mary Peat the wife of Jeffrey Peat the sum of one hundred pounds. 

To my servant Margaret Lawson the sum of ten pounds.

To John Lowman my servant man ten pounds. 

All which said legacies I order and direct shall be paid by my executrix hereinafter named at the end of twelve months next after my decease. 

I give my family bible to Isabella Fisher

All the rest residue and remainder of my real and personal estate I give devise and bequeath unto my heiress at law Isabella the wife of Thomas Chambers of Pelutho and her heirs for ever. 

All of my said legacies as well as my just debts I order to be paid out of my personal estate and if my said personal estate shall be insufficient to pay off the same then I order and direct my copyhold estate upon which I now live to be sold to pay off one mortgage thereon and the deficiency of my said personal estate in paying off any said debts and legacies. 

And I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint my said niece Isabella the wife of the said Thomas Chambers sole executrix and residuary legatee of this my last will and testament . 

And I do declare all other will and wills by me at any time heretofore made to be null and void to all intents and purposes as if the same had never been made. 

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this thirty first day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty nine.

Signed sealed published and declared by the said testator Robert Watman as and for his last will and testament in the presence of us who in his presence and at his request and in the presence of each other have subscribed our names as witnesses thereto.

Effects under £600 proved the 12th. Day of June 1839 Isabella Chambers sole executrix.
