John Lawson
I John Lawson of Whitrigglees in the Parish of Aikton in the County of Cumberland, Yeoman do make publish ordain and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say. I give and bequeath unto my sister Sarah Lawson of Bowness in the said County and her assigns for and during the term of her natural life one annuity clear yearly Rent or Sum of Twelve Pounds and Twelve Shillings of lawful money of Great Britain free of taxes and all other deductions whatsoever to be yearly and every year issuing and payable out of all my freehold Closes or Parcels of land commonly called and known by the several and respective names of High Marsh Close, Little Three Knocked Marsh Close, Great Marsh Close and Little Close at the end thereof and the marsh thereunto adjoining situate lying and being at or within the Precincts or Liberties of Kirkbride in the said County of Cumberland and to be paid and payable by two equal Payments in the Year That is to say, the second day of February and the first day of August in each year the first payment thereof to begin and be made on such of the said days as shall first and next happen after my decease. And I do hereby subject and make chargeable all the said Closes or Parcels of land Marsh Hereditaments and Premises with and unto the payment of the said Annuity yearly rent or sum of Twelve pounds and Twelve shillings accordingly and my will is in Case the said Annuity yearly Rent or sum of Twelve pounds and Twelve shillings or any part thereof shall happen to be behind or unpaid by the space of fourteen days next after it becomes due and payable as aforesaid then and so often from Time to Time as it shall so happen it shall and may be lawful for my said sister Sarah Lawson and her assigns to distrain for the same as in Cases of Distress for rent on common demises or Leases which said Annuity yearly rent or sum of Twelve pounds and Twelve shillings given to my said sister Sarah Lawson and her heirs for life as aforesaid I declare is intended to be and is so given to her in full recompense and satisfaction of and for the payment of the sum of Twelve pounds and Twelve shillings a year secured to her in and by a certain Bond having date on or about the fifth day of March one thousand eight hundred and two entered into by me and my son in law Thomas Barnes my surety for securing the payment thereof to her during the Term of her natural Life. Also I give and bequeath unto my three Grandsons John Barnes, Thomas Barnes and Joseph Barnes sons of my Daughter Jane Barnes wife of the said Thomas Barnes All my said freehold Closes and Parcels of land and marsh with their and every of their Appurtenances commonly called and known by the several and respective names of High marsh Close, Little Three Knocked marsh Close, Great marsh Close and Little Close at the end thereof and the marsh thereunto adjoining situate lying and being at or within the Precincts or Liberties of Kirkbride aforesaid in the County of Cumberland and all other my freehold Closes or Parcels of land Marsh and Hereditaments whatsoever and wheresoever lying and being at Kirkbride aforesaid or within the Precincts or Liberties thereof and elsewhere in the Parish of Kirkbride aforesaid, save and except the Parcel of unimproved land part of Kirkbride Common hereinafter mentioned. To hold the said Closes or parcels of land Marsh Hereditaments and Premises with their and every of their appurtances (except aforesaid) unto my said grandsons the said John Barnes, Thomas Barnes & Joseph Barnes their heirs and assigns forever as Tenants in Common and not as joint tenants but subject unto and charged and chargeable with the Payment afterwards of the said Annuity yearly Rent or sum of Twelve pounds and Twelve shillings herein before mentioned if my said sister Sarah Lawson shall then be living and not otherwise. And also subject and charged and chargeable with the Payment of the clear Annuity or Annual Sum of Six pounds and Six shillings unto my daughter Jane Barnes wife of Thomas Barnes in case she shall survive her said husband for and during her natural life if she shall so long continue his widow and not marry again. The said last mentioned Annuity or yearly sum to be paid by two equal half yearly Payments that is to say on the second day of February and the first day of August in each and every year the first thereof to begin and to be made on either of the said days which shall first happen next after the decease of the said Thomas Barnes my Son in Law, and in case of none payment of the said last mentioned Annuity or any part thereof for the space of fourteen days next after the same shall become due I do hereby give unto my Daughter the said Jane Barnes the like Power of Entry and Distress as I have before given unto my said sister Sarah Lawson for the Annuity given and bequeathed unto her as aforesaid. And whereas I have contracted with Joseph Hodgson of Kirkbride aforesaid for the sale of the Parcel of unimproved Land part of Kirkbride Common lately set out and allotted to me in respect of the said Closes Inclosures Pieces or Parcels of Land and Premises at Kirkbride aforesaid hereinbefore given and devised unto my Grandsons John Barnes, Thomas Barnes & Joseph Barnes. Now I do hereby declare my will to be that in case the said Purchase shall not be complete before my death and my said Grandsons John Barnes, Thomas Barnes & Joseph Barnes shall refuse upon being required by the said Joseph Hodgson the Purchaser of the said Parcel of unimproved Land to execute any conveyance or Assurance then and in such case the Estate and Estates hereby given unto them their heirs and assigns as aforesaid of and in the said Closes and Inclosures Pieces or Parcels of land situate and being at Kirkbride aforesaid shall cease determine and be utterly void. And then and from henceforth the same shall go and become vested in my son Joseph Lawson his heirs and Assigns forever subject nevertheless to the said Annuities hereinbefore given and devised unto my said sister Sarah Lawson and my said Daughter Jane Barnes. And my meaning and will further is and I do expressly declare that my personal Estate or any part thereof shall not be subject or liable to the payment of the said Annuity of Twelve pounds and Twelve shillings or the debt which I may have become liable to by entering into and executing the Bond hereinbefore mentioned with the said Thomas Barnes my surety for the Payment thereof but that my said personal Estate and every part thereof shall be entirely exonerated and discharged from the Payment of the same and every part thereof.
Also I give devise and bequeath unto my Grandson John Lawson son of my son Joseph Lawson his heirs and Assigns all my freehold Closes or Parcels of Land and marsh adjoining or lying contiguous to each other with their and every of their appurtances situate lying and being at Whitrigglees aforesaid or within the Precincts or Liberties thereof commonly called and known by the several and respective names of New Close, Longstrickle and New Dykes Crow Close with the marsh thereunto adjoining containing together by estimation six acres be the same more or less. To hold the same with their and every of their appurtenances unto my said Grandson John Lawson his Heirs and Assigns forever . Also I give and bequeath unto my said Grandson John Lawson exempt and discharged from the payments of any of my debts my bedstead and feather bed which I frequently lie in and the Blankets Sheets Pillows Pillowslips and Hangings thereunto belonging, also my clock and case thereunto the Round Table and Arm Chair in my Bedroom and my Cupboard in my kitchen at Whitrigglees aforesaid. Also my white faced bay mare with the saddle and Bridle belonging to her and one of my heifers. Also I give and bequeath unto my Granddaughter Jane Lawson daughter of my said son Joseph Lawson exempt and discharged from the payment of my debts my bedstead adjoining to the Bedstead hereinbefore by me given to my said Grandson and the feather Bed Blanket Sheets Pillows Pillowslips and Hangings thereunto belonging. Also I give and bequeath unto my Granddaughter Sarah Lawson daughter of my said son Joseph Lawson the Corner Cupboard in my Parlour at Whitrigglees aforesaid. Also I give and bequeath unto my said daughter Jane Barnes wife of the said Thomas Barnes exempt and discharged from the payment of my debts, my Bedstead in my Parlour loft at Whitrigglees aforesaid and the feather Bed Blankets Sheets Pillows Pillowslips and Hangings thereunto belonging and my Chest of Drawers in my Parlour at Whitrigglees aforesaid over and above what I have herebefore before devised to her as aforesaid. All the Rest Residue and Remainder of all my personal Estate whatsoever and wheresoever and of what Nature Kind and Quality soever the same be that doth in any wise belong to me either at law or in Equity (and not hereinbefore given and disposed of) I give and bequeath the same unto my said son Joseph Lawson he paying and discharging all my just debts (excepting the debt hereinbefore mentioned relating to the said Annuity) Legacies funeral expenses and the expense of the probate of this my will in aid of the said Residue of my personal Estate I subject and charge and hereby make chargeable all my freehold Lands and Hereditaments not hereinbefore by me given and devised and which will at my decease descend to my said son Joseph Lawson as my Heir at Law with the payment of my said debts (except as herebefore excepted) funeral expenses and the expenses of the probate of this my will and I hereby make name ordain constitute and appoint my said son Joseph Lawson full whole and sole executor and residuary Legatee of this my last will and testament as I do hereby revoke all former and other will and wills at any time heretofore made and do declare this only to be my last will and testament.

Codicil to this will
I John Lawson of Whitrigglees in the Parish of Aikton in the County of Cumberland do make this a Codicil to my last Will and Testament bearing date the 24 August 1812. Whereas it is recited in my said will that I had contracted and agreed with Joseph Hodgson of Kirkbride aforesaid for the sale of the parcel of unimproved land part of Kirkbride Common lately set out and allotted to me in respect of certain Closes or Inclosures of land therein mentioned.
And whereas the price or sum to be paid for the said pieces of unimproved Land by the said Joseph Hodgson to me was one hundred and ninety Pounds which sum I hereby give and bequeath unto my son Joseph Lawson.
