John Lawson
April 17 1717 I John Lawson of Bowness in the County of Cumberland Yeoman come to make this my last will and testament.
First I give and bequeath my soul to almighty God my maker and redeemer through the merits of his son Jesus Christ to have free pardon and forgiveness of all my sins. And my body to be buried in the burial place of my forefathers in the churchyard of Bowness at the discretion of my executors. I leave my worldly goods in manner as followeth, I hereby order and appoint those men here named to be fathers in trust to my son Thomas Lawson until he comes to the age of 21 years, to ask b demand levy sue in their own names all debts or contracts due now, or shall become due hereafter to me John Lawson for the proper use of my son Thomas Lawson for he comes to the age of 21 years.
I leave to my son Thomas Lawson all my estate real and personal to him and his heirs for ever being a Lawson born by name, paying all debts and legacies arising out of the profits.
I leave to my three daughters Joan Lawson, Dorothy and Mary One Hundred Pounds to be paid to them when they come to the age of 21 years at his usual house at Bowness to be demanded.
I leave to my wife Mary Lawson the best bedding of bedclothes about the house and the best cow about the house forever, with the last land at Whittrigg with the pasture Close at Brown Moor enduring her life natural adjoining to Simon Smith meadow.
I leave my wife to be guardian to my four children until my son comes to the age of 21 years, and with all the land meadow grass and mill now in my own possession which I now please make sow and tillage of for the maintaining of my wife and four children, until my son comes to the age of 21 years with the new dwelling house and all other houses belonging to the said house, as long as she keeps herself unmarried and no longer, making a just account to the feoffs of the said land and mill yearly and every year until my son comes to the age of 21 years more and maintains the children.
If any of my children shall die before they come to the age of 21 years, what their share was to be, is to be equally divided among the rest of my children as long as any of them is living being a born Lawson.
I do hereby appoint my brother Robert Lawson of Bowness, John Wise of Seaville, David Hodgson of Wormalby and William Sturdy Jun. Of Moorhouse to be feoffs in trust for my son Thomas Lawson for he comes to the age of 21 years, to account honestly and justly one of them with another , and cause the guardian to account yearly and every year for the profits of the estate in her possession if there be any to manage honestly and justly for the use of the said Thomas Lawson for he comes to the age of 21 years.
If he happens to die before he comes to the age of 21 years you are hereby to be feoffs in trust for my daughters for they be at the full age. I do hereby authorise you the feoffs to ask for all debts contracts now owing being due to me or shall become due to me or the Thomas Lawson out of the profits of the estate real or personal and to make and give a just account to the said Thomas or to his next heir when he or they shall come to the full age of 21 years. And likewise to give such receipts as you think proper in law, to any person or persons that is or may be concerned allowing you the feoffs reasonable charges daily and every day you are employed on their occasion, if any of my daughters shall marry against the consent of the feoffs and their mother they are but to have Fifty Pounds to their portion.
I make my son Thomas Lawson to be my executor of all my goods movable and immovable paying all debts and legacies and funeral expenses. As witness my hand.
