Christopher Lawson
In the name of God Amen. I Christopher Lawson of Drumburgh in the parish of Bowness in the County of Cumberland Yeoman being weak in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be to God for the same do make this my last will and testament in form following, that is to say
First I give and bequeath unto my son Joseph Lawson of Kirkbampton in the said County carpenter and to his heirs and assigns forever all and each and every my freehold closes parts and parcels of arable land meadow and pasture ground situate lying and being at or within the township territories or town fields of Kirkbampton aforesaid in the parish of Kirkbampton in the said County in several places there hereafter mentioned that is to say one close of meadow ground at a place called Potting one days work more or less, also one acre of arable land more or less at a place there called Sandert Flat, also one close there called the Lees one acre more or less, also one parcel of ground there called Gallowborough three roods more or less, also one close there called Haver Lands one acre more or less, and all of my undivided shares and proportions of the grounds and closes there called Burgh Moor and Whitemire by computation one cows grass and a half. And also all other and singular my freehold lands and tenements and hereditaments situate lying and being at Kirkbampton aforesaid or elsewhere in the said parish of Kirkbampton with their and every of their appurtenances to have and to hold all and every the aforesaid closes parts and parcels of ground with their appurtenances hereby devised and bequeathed or mentioned so to be unto my said son Joseph Lawson his heirs and assigns for ever.
Also I give and bequeath unto my youngest son Richard Lawson his heirs and assigns for ever all my freehold messuage lands and tenements with their and every of their appurtenances situate and lying or being at or within the township territories or town fields of Drumburgh aforesaid in the said parish of Bowness in the said County which I purchased from Charles Irton and Thomas Wybrough gentlemen and others and hold of the right honourable Henry Lord Viscount Lonsdale Lord of the Baronry of Burgh in the said County by and under the payment of the annual free rent of Forty shillings and Six pence at Martinmass and Pentecost by equal proportions and also all other and singular my freehold lands tenements and hereditaments whatsoever lying and being at Drumburgh aforesaid or elsewhere in the said parish of Bowness together with and singular the commons moors mosses arable lands, meadows, pasture rights members and appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise apportioning and the reversion and reversions remainder and remainders thereof and theirs and every of their appurtenances to have and to hold all my aforesaid messuages lands tenements and hereditaments situate lying and being at Drumburgh aforesaid or elsewhere in the parish of Bowness with their and every of their appurtenances hereby devised and bequeathed unto my said son Richard Lawson his heirs and assigns to the sole and proper use and behoofs of my said son Richard Lawson his heirs and assigns for ever.
Also I give and bequeath to my daughter Anne Lawson the sum of One Hundred Pounds of British money, also I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary now wife of John Borrowdaile of Glasson the sum of One Hundred Pounds of current British money, also to my granddaughter Mary Pattinson the sum of Ten Pounds, also I give and bequeath to my grandson Thomas Lawson my heir apparent the sum of Twenty Pounds when he attains his full age of Twenty One years.
All other and singular my goods chattels cattle bills bonds mortgages sum and sums of money and all other my personal estate whatsoever my debts legacies and funeral expenses being first paid and satisfied I give devise and bequeath unto my dear and loving wife Anne and my second son Richard Lawson equally to be divided betwixt them and I hereby nominate constitute and appoint my said wife Anne and my said son Richard Lawson executors jointly and severally of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills and testaments by me made.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this Twenty Second day of March 1737/8.
